About Me

Belinda Jones – My Story

Hello, My name is Belinda Jones. Everyone calls me ‘Bee’. I am nominating as an Independent candidate in the Fadden by-election on 15th July 2023.

I am a mother of 3 and a grandmother of 3, and have lived and worked on the Gold Coast for over thirty years. I am a successful independent Journalist with a second part-time job to make ends meet. (Published work listed here.)

When I moved to the Gold Coast in the 1980s, Fadden’s bustling northern Gold Coast growth corridor didn’t exist, and M1 hadn’t even been built! Back then, I had a spiral perm, wore all the 80s fashion and delivered pizzas for Marie’s Pizza. So much has changed since then!

When I married and started a family, I moved to the south coast of NSW for several years before returning to the Gold Coast in the late 1990s. I faced the challenge of being a single mum with 3 kids. I completed my Bachelor of Education at Griffith University, Gold Coast and began teaching. Struggling to make ends meet on a teacher’s wage, I took on second jobs. Gold Coast cab driver, Surfside bus driver, FIFO (fly-in, fly-out) worker on a construction project.

Being away from my home, family and friends on the Gold Coast was hard yakka and I was glad when the job wrapped up and I got to come home.

By this time, I had begun to connect-the-dots that many of the challenges I faced resulted from poor political decisions or representation, which profoundly impacted my life. I continued to work in low-paid, casual and insecure work, or at times, became unemployed. Time and again, I have faced these challenges and refused to give up. My story is not unique. I’ve met and worked with so many wonderful people over the years in the same position as me. We don’t have the perfect career, or life didn’t turn out exactly perfectly but we just keep getting up and showing up and striving for success. You’ve just got to stay strong, stay positive and keep going. I began building my Twitter #Auspol profile & talking politics with politically engaged Australians determined to affect change. This prompted me to start writing for Independent Australia in 2018, investigating some of the most corrupt politicians in Australian history. I now have a fortnightly column and a casual retail job at Harbour Town with THE most awesome team!

I’m stepping up to nominate as the local member for Fadden because for 16 years the people of Fadden have been neglected and left behind. They deserve an MP who has their back and will work hard for them. They deserve an MP who understands what it’s like to struggle with insecure, low-paid work. They deserve an MP who understands the pressures of being a single parent or a FIFO worker, a true local who cares.

I will work hard for Fadden, I have lived experience of struggle and being a single parent with work and financial pressure. I get it.

If the people of Fadden elect me on 15th July, 2023 I will not let them down. They’ve had more than enough of that already, it’s time they had a proper MP.

Kindest regards,
